24 hr diners are brilliant. Where else can you go when the bars have stopped serving food. Where else is open at 2 am and beyond that can you see anyone from young dolled up prom goers to older rough and tumbles who may have had one too many encounters with life's knock outs and don't forget the favorite drunk and surly need grease bomb to soak up whatever poison that has made them the inebriated mess that is often entirely too loud for that time in the a.m.. The wait staff can be anywhere from surly to sweet as pie but who cares if it's 2 am and I'm awake for whatever reason that is and all I know is I'm hungry and I don't want to cook.
Leroy's Diner in Anchorage, welcome to every diner you've ever found yourself at, in the predawn hours. Furnished with only the most authentic well loved, smoke stained, vinyl covered seats from the 60's/70's?? idk... whenever that place was spanking new and shiny.. And tonight's waitstaff selection a newb, who introduced herself and said it was her first night waiting tables and while nice does something to perturb me later, but I will get to that later. The order was a mushroom swiss burger with reindeer sausage, the food was good and plentiful, the service was prompt, the price was reasonable in a town where prices are often not so reasonable.. then as things were finishing up, the bill was getting paid by my drunk friend (the reason I was there, whom I had picked up from the bar because I'm nice) and I said to the waitress "congrats on your new job" her sarcastic response was "yeah now I can pay the bills" so I shut up.. my friend left a more than generous tip and when she picked that up she said "you guys can come back anytime.. She may be a newb, but she was way to old to be that socially awkward. Long story short, short story long.. Leroy's is as decent a place one could imagine to get your 24 hr diner needs met. Happy Eating..
