breakfast of champions

No I'm not writing about Wheaties or the Kurt Vonnegut book which is pretty good but not my favorite Vonnegut book, which is currently Cat's Cradle.

No, no book reviews today.

I have been on an oatmeal kick lately.  Which is surprising because forever I thought I only liked it with a ton of milk and brown sugar or Quakers instant with raisins and spice (yes, I've been indoctrinated into the Quakers brand through years of advertisements.. I honestly can't even imagine any other brands out there). Then I decided I hated oatmeal for a while because I would see a friend of mine eat it with Amy's honey yogurt which for some reason the combo was so horrific it put me off yogurt and oatmeal for the past couple years. A while ago I was in a hurry and tired of my usuals. There was some oatmeal and some dried cherries and a jug of maple syrup.. It took a whooping 2 min to make and it was good. thus my oatmeal kick was born. That being said I have had a busy couple of weeks which used to mean either a fried egg sandwich, breakfast burrito, cereal, breakfast bar or maybe if I was having a crazy moment I've been known to go for a toasted pop tart... For shame right?

Today I was feeling like changing up the maple syrup & cherry oats and I grabbed the marmalade. Marmalade is something I never thought I'd like when I was little in my mind it was dubbed "old people food" because my grandma liked it.  However it became an acquired taste when I was at a friends who had no other options for jamming my toast.  Marmalade oatmeal was a pleasant change on my pallet... Instead of heavy warm maple flavor I got the light, fresh zing of citrus. Perfect for a summer oatmeal.  The best thing about it though is it's great for lowering cholesterol which is fantastic for your heart and it's good source of fiber which I think everyone needs.
