not your mother's ovaltine

I love Ovaltine hot or cold. The vitamin enriched chocolate comfort drink is not that bad for you (other than the loaded with sugar part, terrible dyes and maybe some other things I try not to think about) but it is completely worth the sugar bomb as it is a time machine in a cup that takes me back to youth when sweet Flintstones vitamins were an encouraged thing to devour.. and yes in memory I guiltily still love more than normal vitamins but I may have suplimented my Flintstones with adult gummy vitamins (I recently discovered they use aspartame in Flintstones, it was a sad day for my future children).

I have once again learned another lesson about my Thai friends and their food/beverage habits (remember cereal sandwich)...  Thai style Ovaltine ~ at least I can say I tried it once but maybe never again.  While I admit it was very yummy I imagine that it contains at least twice the amount of sugar.  The following recipe is how my Thai friend Ing makes Ovaltine which is reminiscent of my dad's Vietnamese coffees.

so sweet i rot your teeth upon viewing

Ingredients:
2-3 tbs of Ovaltine - My favorite flavor is malt. Yay malty goodness! Malt flavor is the real reason I drink Ovaltine instead of making my own blend which lets me control the ingredients.
1-3 tbs of condensed milk - the more the creamier.. but also the more the sweeter.. it's a balance.. a very precarious balance.
hot water for hot Ovaltine.. cold water for cold Ovaltine about 8 oz or so

Directions:
mix all ingredients in your favorite coffee cup.. drink.. feel the sugar course through your veins..

  2. I may have been having Ovaltine & condensed milk cravings all day today.. Oh the sweet creaminess.. but my pancreas says "you will pay if you drink that"

Here's an informative website for those interested in food education.

The particular post talks about the evils of Ovaltine and why we shouldn't drink it. Maybe we shouldn't but until I can figure out how to make my own chocolate-malty goodness I will not stress out about one of my guilty pleasures ingredients.

  3. Good news the European style is available in Asian grocery marts and oddly looks and tastes a bit different in a really good way. Highly recommended to get the European recipe for Ovaltine consumption.
