intolerance-smolerance

My Asian descendant tummy does not love dairy, my American tongue does.  It's a war that I am not always prepared for with enzyme supplements (yes, Amazon is my favorite shop ever) when a delicious dairy treat attacks from nowhere and demands to be consumed.  I know some would say just give up dairy entirely.. I say that is for people far braver than I.  For I have many times in my life attempted to like some kind of nicotine addict made the switch to soy, coconut milk or even the pricey hemp milk unfortunately it doesn't substitute well enough for my liking, the cheeses don't taste or feel like cheese should and the mouth feel and sweetness of soy/coconut/hemp/almond etc.. is all wrong for cereal and absolutely doesn't work for chowders.  Besides they are all so processed that I'm not sure they can/'t be all that good for you either.

Anyway, on to my post Alaska is full of strange surprises on the 1/2 dozen highways  that are available for driving upon (what Alaska lacks in quantity of highways it makes up in distance many of them take at least 4-6 hrs to get from one part to another bring snacks if you're driving in the winter because many of these things are closed during the eternity of darkness that winter feels like it brings).  One of those surprises is the fact that along the highway are some pretty good places to get malts.. If you're wondering what a malt is it's essentially a milkshake with malt in it.  The taste of malt is a unique thing, I'm not sure why I like it more than a normal milkshake maybe it dates back to my years of Ovaltine consumption as a child/adult.  Who knows?  My two favorite stops for malts are located on these long remote stretches of highway.  The one in the photo bellow is Trapper Creek Inn.  I won't vouch for the Inn aspect of this little stop but I will say the malts are mighty tasty...  and it's hard to miss as it's right before Wal*Mikes if you're coming from Anchorage.  If you don't know what Wal*Mikes is, you're missing out.. it's a bizarre combination of a junk/hardware/sportsman/grocery/antique shop with occasional treasures and a lot of trash my favorite part is being greeted by two tiny rat dogs that sniffle at your feet wanting love while you wander through the shop looking at oddities.  The other one is in Sterling, Alaska and it's called Robin's Nest 1950's style Ice Cream parlor and while it's right on the highway to Homer it's easy to miss because you can't see the sign till you're right up on it.  The atmosphere is not quite a 50's ice cream parlor but it is spacious, clean, they give pleasant service and the only thing that really matters is that they make a mean malt.
malty goodness + lactose intolerance = dairy tummy payback

look in our beady eyes and say you will love us

wal*mike's everything you know you probably don't need
